Tentacles Report
By Greg Stafford
I didn't actually plan to go to Tentacles at all. I had plenty to do. I was just
there, sitting at my desk, when I heard the call. As the siren song lured me I
asked Steve Martin to do some tasks to make sure Anaxial's Roster got out on time,
and found I had no choice in my desires. With very little warning I found myself
whisked away, snatched from my office and hurled into a bewildering array of
transportation troubles which ended with me in Germany.
At one point in this summoning it was like a dream. Roderick Robertson was there
too, and we spent the first morning entirely surrounded by a couple of hundred
police, all wearing the rather rumpled looking brown uniforms of regular police.
We were sitting by the river. First a couple of minivans discharged regular police,
who cleared the parking lot. Then about 25 motorcycle police, all in green uniforms
and yellow helmets, swarmed into the parking lot and lined up. Then a pair of black
vans, and out came police dressed in black, and they opened the panels of the vans
where we could see their flak jackets, helmets and heavy weapons. SWAT team, says
Roderick. A few swaggered around smoking. Side arms. Then a minivan came in and
parked right behind us, and eight or nine plainclothes men got out behind us,
packing big guns in their armpits. Then some cars pulled into the parking lot and
out got a bunch of guys with business suits, sun glasses and wires in their ears.
Some had clipboards, some had brief cases. Three helicopters flew low overhead. A
boat came by and docked a bit up to the right, and out of it came a whole line of
men and women in business suits, some with briefcases and some with machineguns.
They went to the nearer landing dock. The guys behind us put on their sports
jackets and covered their weapons. A cop made all the people with big dogs leave.
The brown shirted guys lined the sidewalk. Another boat came up, a horde of
photographers poured out, and then out came Chancellor Schröder and President
Chirac of France. They were going to go up to Castle Stalheck for a barbeque.
Then I heard the summoning clearly. Bang! Explosions. Fooof! Flares are blinding,
bright and colorful. It was a dark night, I was in a darker place. A tentacle
appears, and suddenly, I am there. More flares go off. "Welcome to Tentacles
2000!" So I spent the week end at that convention.
Tentacles is practically an Issaries/Chaosium event. They are the first convention
to have such a tremendous Hero Wars event: over a dozen games played all at once
one afternoon, talks and plenty of pickup games, plus Gloranthan freeform, and so
on. This convention is always a blast. I will always recommend it to anyone who's
looking for a great time with Hero Wars. I sure did. I will plan to be there next
year.
