Orang Utans are orange-haired apes, who live in the
treetops of the Teshnan jungle. Large cheek pads give them their
typical appearance. Orang Utans have their own tribal culture and they
call upon the ghosts of the jungle. Nearly every tribe has a shaman of
its own. A tribe is led by a single male, whose Long Call is
the loudest and longest of all males. This call reflects the power of
strength and possession. Fruits, ants, honey - everything in the
territory belongs to the leader, who shares it with his tribe. Adult
males watch carefully about their territory and spend most of their
time roaming through the jungle, watching for strangers. Most leaders
revere Kang Luway, the Monkey King.
Most of the social life of Orang Utans is found around
the oldest females. They care for the tribe and its members during the
long absence of the males. Theirs is the power of Lifegiving.
Without the male there would be no territory, without the female there
would be no tribe. The Mother of the Tribe is the most respected
female; usually the mother of the leader. Most tribal mothers revere Kang
Luway's mother Elesha.
Most Teshnan people treat Orang-Utan as animals, not as
equal beings. As beings of Solf a lot of people don't care for them,
especially citizens of the Teshnan cities. Farmers use trained
Orang-Utans for collecting fruits from the treetops, and treat them
like domestic animals. But some people are still able to speak to them
in Monkey-Tongue and there are stories about villages - deep in the
jungle - where men and Orang-Utans live together in a single community
First Somash - he is Light - created the light.
Then Somash - he is Life - made Life, and created all the
plants, animals and men. It was a work of tremendous beauty, and he
called all the gods to see his great work. And they came, watched in
amazement, praised his work and began to celebrate. Solf was
among them and he wanted to be celebrated, too. The next day, he began
to create his own men. But Solf's mind was clouded with poisons
and drugs, and so his work became twisted and didn't obtain the beauty
of Somash's work. So Solf's men became ashamed,
avoided Somash's gaze, hid in the treetops and became the
Orang Utans - the people of the wood.
