Griselda is a prominent character in the New Pavis subculture. However, she maintains no
permanent links and is very much a loner on this dangerous frontier. She knows New Pavis like
the back of her hand, and anyone who is anyone respects or fears her. She first came here
several years ago to avenge the death of her brother, and stayed on. Some idealistic people
have glamorized her as an 'adventurer queen', but she is certainly no grand hero of the people.
Whilst on a few occasions she has shown that within her soul rests a degree of human decency,
she would have no hesitation in exploiting someone who idolizes her if this was to her advantage.
Griselda is not the kind to spend time or money on futile undertakings, nor to waste energy
expressing emotions. Other unscrupulous criminals who behave like her would have been killed a
long time ago by one or other of the factions duped by her plots, but she has a certain charm,
not to mention an innate cunning and a knack for playing her reputation. This includes the widely
held belief that killing her would invite swift and final retribution from her wide circle of
admirers. She has also traveled far and seen many things, and is unlikely ever to be intimidated
or caught without options. When would-be heroes threaten her, her eyes alone can quickly convey
to all but the bravest or most foolish that they are viewing their own mortality.
Griselda has a respect for the ways of Orlanth and Ernalda, but is a smuggler and con-artist by
profession, and prides herself on ingenuity and acts of skill. Whilst she fights agilely and with
great courage and resourcefulness when necessary, she does not inflict harm without her own good
reasons. Because she grew up in Sartar, has red hair, and is an accomplished fighter, many have
mistakenly assumed that Griselda follows Vinga, the Heortling goddess of women warriors. Her
religious background is not actually complex, but only a source of speculation because she
regards it as her own private business. She worships an ancestor of her family - Kovendra the
Smuggler, whose specialization is to provide spirits of deception and shrewdness.
Her business in Pavis, which only Wolfhead has any real knowledge of, is partly as the
representative of her family's smuggling operations. Much contraband from Dragon Pass ends up
here, being quietly laundered before going back into circulation. Griselda's brother may have
been scouting Pavis for their criminal purposes when he came to his death. Her family is of Old
Pavic stock, with her father having moved them all to Alone in order to pursue wider business
opportunities. Both Griselda and Wolfhead perform services for the Pavis Cult, ranging from
simple things such as protective patrols in Manside to more dangerous missions deep into the
Rubble. Although their duty to repay the Pavis Priests (for sorting out the problems with
various Cult leaders after the 'Great Chart Caper') is over, they have various reasons for
continuing this arrangement.
Griselda can be a prominent character in any series of Pavis adventures set in 1619-1620.
She can be at different times either an ally, an enemy, or a rival of the players' heroes. The
Narrator should not hesitate to do whatever is necessary to stir the Heroes' passions towards
this enigmatic figure: they might fall in love with her (although this is most unlikely to be
reciprocated), or just as easily die by her hand if they try and cross her. She disappears for
quite some time after the Cradle passes through Pavis in Sea Season 1621, but later returns for
a few years. She may eventually become a patron for adventurers who are not adverse to a bit of
clandestine work transporting or hiding stolen goods, coded messages, or sometimes even wanted
rebels who are evading the law.
