OK, having succumbed and bought the new Pavis book, I have just been reading The Seven Mothers Cult and am getting my head round Lunar Magic. On p. 418 it says you can swap your (Moon Phase) Rune for a Chaos Rune to perform any corrupted version magical effect. Is this a permanent change? Does one lose the (Moon Phase) rune and gain the Chaos rune from then on? I thought not, but the paragraph beginning “even if successful” suggests it is a permanent change. I note no member of any of the Seven Mothers subcults can do this anyway as it is against their strictures? Or does that just mean they SHOULD NOT do this?Also if the character fails and takes a Lingering Penalty which warps them in some horrible chaotic way, gaining a Chaos Feature, is that a permanent change? The fact it is a Lingering penalty rather than a new Flaw suggests this to me, but I can’t imagine extra heads or tentacles vanishing suddenly, so thought I would ask! ­čśÇ┬ácj x

Not all Chaos is permanent

It’s permanent, you loose your moon phase and get to keep the chaos rune that has just saved your life. You can continue to try and use your chaos rune as your Moon phase hoping not to do anything to weird with it, but eventually you will succumb to the dark side of the moon. If you aren’t sevened it’s going to be difficult, but if you are, well the goddess used Chaos so it’s okay…As for breaking strictures, of course you can. The Seven Mothers strictures against Chaos magic are there to stop you being tempted. Many break strictures and have them renewed (page 404), but getting the Seven Mothers to renew them for becoming chaotic is a long shot.

After discussion, it is a lingering penalty (a state of adversity┬áderived from┬áa consquence of defeat HQ2 page 28):Hurt: “Unless the Narrator has a compelling dramatic reason to┬ádecide otherwise, hurts vanish at the end of a session, after┬áone day of rest per accumulated hurt, or when in-game events┬ájustify their removal.” You’ve probably got a temporary chaos feature. Impaired and Injured, hard to get “better” from.┬áVisible extra body parts can disappear using the method outlined by Keith. Dying – ┬áturn into a chaos horror.

My understanding is that:- the rune swap is temporary and lasts only for the contest or the duration of the scene- the chaos taint is permanent- the lingering penalty is usually temporary and wears off after some time (however, the narrator could rule that the penalty turns out to be permanent on a major or complete defeat).That’s just my humble opinion.RoM

OK RoM and Science Fish seem to have different interpretations of this? I’m still confused. ­čÖé Is either to be considered an official ruling? I think it might be worth publishing a clarification? ­čśÇ
