Employment in Pavis

My Ernalda priestess in Pavis made a small fortune in the Rubble and plans to do what every decent adventurer wants to do: settle down, buy some land, build a farm, marry an honourable and hard-working man and raise plenty of children.

To achieve that I need some employees/cottars to plough the fields and tend the livestock. My question is: How do I get workers? From vagabonds or a clan? How (and how much) do I pay them? Would it be a long or short term contract? What else is important? I assume the market works differently in Pavis than in Sartar, where probably everything would be handled within one’s own clan.

is she a local?

If yes, then she should consider gifting some of her newfound wealth to the ring or clan temple secure a better position within the clan. If she is of high status (likely as she is already a priestess), there is a good chance that she can then attract an underhusband rather than having to marry out into another clan. She will always try to go through the clan first to attract some poor cottars to join her stead. If there are none available, then she should see if the ring will allow her to adopt outsiders into the clan? Does the clan keep slaves? If yes, then this is another possibility, that she can buy slaves. If she is a very junior priestess, then the clan ring may have plans to marry her out to secure some important relationship with another clan. This could be the start of a whole new set of adventures and relationships as she builds her place in the new clan. If she is not local, then marrying into a local clan would likely be high on her priority list. What about her clan? Where are they? Will they want to have some say in marrying off one of their high status members? In summary, for an Ernaldan, the clan should be at the center of all of her ambitions.

She is no local

She is no local. She came from the Greenstone temple and had to leave Sartar for unspecified reasons. Therefore she is still member of a clan but that is probably not so important in Pavis right now. The Pavis book (p. 208) states that it is possible for foreigners to “buy” some land from a local clan in exchange for wealth and an oath of loyalty. If my character does that (without marrying into the clan) would she get cottars from the clan? Would she be free to hire vagabonds or would the ring still decide on these matters? Will the protection of the clan be extended to her, e.g. in matters of wergild?

becoming a local

Submitted by Charles on Wed, 13/06/2012 – 09:48. If she can prove her worth to a local clan (I’m thinking more of worth as a priestess rather than value of money here), perhaps she could marry into one of the clans and get a stead that way. A proven priestess of Ernalda is already close to the status of a thane or possibly even close to the status of a noble. A reasonable sized gift to the clan ring might even get her the choice of prospective husbands and a second gift might help them to decide that the happy couple need a good stead. If she eventually decides (or is forced) to leave the clan, then likely one of the gifts can be reclaimed as her brideprice. Just be careful in negotiating the exact status as a wife – if she is forced to leave in a hurry, do you want to have small children with her when the Lunars are close behind on her trail.

If the clan has extra

If she swore loyalty to the clan leaders, the clan extends its protection to her – these things are reciprocal. Editor-in-Chief, Moon Design Publications
